Because firing voltages are typically in the thousands, readings are referred to as KV (kilovolts) readings. Secondary voltage measurements are possible on ignition systems using distributors and on DSI (Distributorless or Direct ignition system) type system. Measurements are not possible on one coil per plug systems. Much like more costly ignition oscilloscopes, the Peak KV tester allows the user to compare cylinder firing voltages to one another. These KV readings may be taken at idle or at higher engine speeds with the engine time than required to hookup an ignition oscilloscope.
